An allergy is a heightened sensitivity to a foreign substance (called an allergen) that causes the body’s defense system (the immune system) to overact when defending itself. Allergies can generally be controlled with proper prevention and treatment.

May is recognized as National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month. “Allergy is a leading chronic disease in the United States and symptoms vary greatly in severity and type.
