Tips for Healthy Travel

Traveling and exploring new places is fun and exciting, but not when you’re sick. Proper preparation can help you stay healthy, avoid travel-related illnesses, and ensure a smooth, enjoyable journey. Whether you’re traveling to an away game, or headed to grandma’s house for the holidays, here are some tips to make sure you have safe travels and a healthy homecoming.

Before Travel:

  1. Make sure you’re up-to-date on your annual flu shot and any other needed vaccinations.
  2. Bring any prescribed medications and take them as directed during your trip. Be sure to pack extra medication in case travel plans are delayed.
  3. Prepare a travel kit or baggie with over-the-counter medications that might be difficult to find on your trip, as well as insect repellant, hand sanitizer, sunscreen and first aid supplies.
  4. Remember to pack an appropriate car seat and stroller for your child. Also you can now rent baby items, such as strollers, car seat, play pen, etc., for delivery at your destination location. A few of these businesses include babyquip.com and travelingbaby.com.

If you are Traveling Abroad:

  1. Check the CDC’s destination pages for travel health information about any vaccines or medications you may need and the diseases or health risks at your destination.
  2. Make an appointment with your healthcare provider to get destination-specific vaccinations and medications and to discuss any health risks.

During your Trip:

  1. Wash your hands regularly to avoid getting sick. Carry hand sanitizer for convenience.
  2. Choose safe food and beverages that aren’t at risk of contamination from the water.
  3. If you’re flying with children, consider bringing a bottle or pacifier for infants to nurse on, as well as chewing gum or drinks with a straw for older children. These can help alleviate ear pressure during the plane’s descent.
  4. Avoid animals that might be stray or carry diseases.
  5. Wear a face mask in high traffic areas to reduce respiratory virus transmission.
  6. Apply sunscreen and insect repellant to prevent sunburn and other insect-borne diseases.
  7. Prioritize a good night’s sleep to help you strengthen your immune system.
